Elga Grīnvalde

Elga Grīnvalde (19 June 1966) studied glass art at the Riga School of Design and Art and at the Art Academy of Latvia (LMA). For two years she specialised in painting in the master studio of Uno Daņiļevskis at the Academy. She has worked as an art teacher. She has taken part in exhibitions since 1993, including many group exhibitions, open-air painting sessions and symposia, as well as artist residencies in Spain and Italy. Her most significant solo exhibitions are “Tukšuma spēks” at the Mark Rothko Art Centre in Daugavpils (Daugavpils, 2020) and “Vertikāles” at the Museum LV gallery (Riga, 2021). A member of the Artists' Union of Latvia since 2003.

In reflecting things that are in essence physically ungraspable, the paintings show a mysterious glow and depth, which the artist has achieved by glazing layers of paint one over another with a broad brush and a palette knife.
Elga Grīnvalde's painting can be described as abstract, yet her main source of inspiration is nature. In her painting she uses, tends and develops an abstract emotional expressionism. The main and most essential thing is the source of light in the paintings. It is what makes depth present.
