The exhibition is like a slow, quiet reflection on events of the past and on the people close to us. On the marks they leave indelibly behind, which find us in the most unexpected situations, even when we have forgotten they exist or have deliberately struck them out of our memory. Like a small pebble they drop into a shoe and begin to make themselves felt.

I do not think there is a right formula for how to live in today's ocean of unrest, when chaos and anxiety sometimes knock you off your feet. I search; I hold on to old things and people I know. My parents' love and care, my grandmother's garden where as children we ate green gooseberries, flowers from long ago – peonies and phlox, the cherry tree my grandfather planted. All of that is still mine; it gives strength and consolation.

In a world of a million unanswered questions it is good to have a pocket where, putting in your hand, you can feel some little pebble.

The exhibition shows 15 paintings and 4 sculptures. It is a bright story balanced between memory, reality and dreams. The slightly playful, childlike figures live their slow life, and a question arises unbidden: “Where was I just running to?”

About the artist

Laima Bikše

Laima Bikše

Laima Bikše's painting is marked by a fragile, sensitive line and a nuanced, muted palette that at moments turns into a lush, saturated presence of colour. In the paintings colour builds up in layers — the surface is glazed, then wiped away or even scraped off, until in places the paint becomes so thin that the canvas itself is laid bare. Its coarse texture enters into dialogue with the fine drawing, making a tension between fragility and materiality.
