The exhibition shows paintings by Džemma Skulme made in watercolour, created at various periods, most of them accessible to a wider public for the first time. Her work is marked by monumentality and by breadth in both form and content. The works are made largely in oil, acrylic and watercolour. The figures she created — mothers, the dowry chest, folk songs, caryatids, riflemen — are brought close to the symbol through philosophical generalisation and associative imagery.
