I see my most recent works as journeys. I paint as though I were travelling, giving myself over to a free brushstroke, to fields of colour, to a free flow that has not been rehearsed in advance.

I am inspired by the play of light in nature, by combinations of colour, by space and its depth. I am inspired by the movement of my own body as I walk. I am inspired by the invisible – the sounds of birds, which in the imagination take shape as interesting interplays of colour, as an ensemble of lines and rhythms. It is a kind of interplay, a communication between me and what I see or hear or know. And my painting is an answer, or a question, to the impulses received.

Daiga Krūze is one of the most versatile and vivid of Latvian painters, and her work has found international recognition as well. Her art is marked by expressively bright, most often abstract compositions. The dynamic of vivid colour and broad brushstrokes stirs an emotional response in the viewer.

Daiga Krūze (1980) studied painting and restoration at the Art Academy of Latvia (2004). She has held 32 solo exhibitions and has taken part in significant group exhibitions both in Latvia and abroad: in the touring project “Nozīmīgākie Latvijas laikmetīgie mākslinieki” in New York, Washington, Chicago and Riga (2012); in the exhibition of nominees for the European

Art Prize (The Sovereign European Art Prize) in Istanbul (2011). Nominated several times for the Vilhelms Purvītis Prize (2008, 2012, 2016).
